Title: Flood Fill / Global Warning
Type: Animations
Date: 2003
Flood Fill was a collaboration with with Guy Meldem, Körner Union. The animations were created for 3G mobile phone operator Hutchison 3G (3), Austria and were shown shown as part of the exhibition Virtual Frame at Kunsthalle, Wien, February 2004. Curator team Liquid Frontiers invited 20 designers and artists to submit 6 animation each, to be displayed on next-generation mobile phones as proof of content delivery on the new multimedia-friendly phones. Hutchison 3G is a multimedia-only mobile service provider.
The animations are inspired by the C-64 computer and its drawing application called Geo Paint. On Geo Paint, the paint bucket function that fills interiors of shapes of the same color was very slow and worked directly in the video memory, due to limitations of the hardware. Therefore one could actually see it doing its work and filling the shapes. There was something hypnotic to that wich made me playing around with it often as a kid. Geo Paint was also cabable of filling with patterns, just like the one used in the animations.
